What is FAST?
FAST — the Association of Academic Staff at RU — is a trade union that safeguards the interests of academic staff at Reykjavík University. The association handles interest representation, collective bargaining and works to improve its members' working conditions.
FAST's members are teachers, professors, associate professors, assistant professors, adjuncts, researchers and other academic staff at RU. The association also offers a dedicated PhD-student membership for doctoral students at Reykjavík University.
Role and objectives
FAST's main objectives are:
- To safeguard members' interests in their terms and rights and to ensure these are fair.
- To promote a better working environment and working conditions at RU.
- To stand guard over academic freedom and job security.
- To strengthen solidarity among academic staff.
- To act as a liaison between members and the university's senior management.
Membership of BHM
FAST is a member union of BHM — the Icelandic Confederation of University Graduates. BHM is an umbrella organisation of 27 trade unions of university-educated people in Iceland, representing the interests of more than 30,000 members. Through BHM, FAST members take part in collective bargaining and enjoy a wide range of rights and benefits.
Membership
All academic staff at Reykjavík University are entitled to join FAST. Membership fees are collected monthly and go towards running the association and its advocacy work.
